Valentine Morby BA Hons MinstF

Founder and Managing Consultant

Valentine has over 18 years experience in the voluntary sector supported by 10 years commercial business experience.

In 1992, after hearing about the plight of the orphans and street-children in Romania following the collapse of Ceacescu’s regime, Valentine drove a van full of humanitarian aid to the country.

On arrival, he saw, at first hand, the children living in the sewers and in the underground tunnels beneath Bucharest.  He then took a post with the leading European charity Caritas and was responsible for the opening and management of Romania’s first centre for street children in Romania at Bucharest’s main railway station, the Gara du Nord.

The centre soon began to attract, not just the street children but television crews, journalists and donors from around the world.  He raised thousands of dollars to help support the work of the centre and to help purchase new children’s safe houses in the city. He was also responsible for several successful radio and television fundraising appeals, broadcast across the globe.

After two years, Valentine returned to London and became Fundraising Manager for the children’s mental health charity Young Minds.  There, he helped the charity to double its size before taking up a new post of Midlands Campaign Manager for the NSPCC’s Full Stop Appeal.  There he set up and managed five appeal committees across the region and, working together with leading business figures in the region, he raised over £5 million - including the UK's first fully charity branded bus.

Valentine then successfully led a £2.5 million capital appeal for the Theatre Royal Bath.   He subsequently became Development Director at the food and environmental charity the Soil Association, leading their £20 million campaign, chaired by HRH The Prince of Wales.

Valentine has worked as an independent fundraising consultant since 2008.  He has been a member of the Institute of Fundraising for over 18 years and is a member of their Emerging Technologies Group as well as being a mentor to a young fundraiser manager in the South West.

In his spare time he loves football, camping, hill walking, reading, the cinema and a pint in a country pub.

Valentine made the training fascinating and his real life examples really brought the theory to life.  He covers the main techniques involved in major donor fundraising but also ensures the smaller but no less critical elements are in place, even his insistency in getting the database systems right was invaluable.   I was a little daunted at first when I saw the areas we would be working on but Valentine made every stage clear and ensured I was able to turn theory into real working systems at my charity.  With his help, I have already started developing my networks and solicitation plans.
